A man borrowed ₹2,300 from an instant loan app. Seven days later, his life was destroyed. This is the full story of the instant loan app scam in Visakhapatnam and the 4 phone permissions that let it happen.
In November 2024, Surada Narendar, a young fisherman from Visakhapatnam, couldn't go out to sea because of bad weather. Desperate for money, he saw an ad for an instant loan app promising money in minutes, no paperwork, no verification. He borrowed ₹1,100. The next day, ₹1,200 more.
What followed was not a loan recovery process. It was organised extortion.
Within days, calls came from international WhatsApp numbers demanding many times the borrowed amount, threatening to leak photos to every contact saved in his phone. Narendar had nothing to hide — and that turned out to be the most dangerous assumption of all. The scammers didn't need real photos. They used morphed images.
