UPI is not Free anymore | New Charges on UPI Transactions explained
UPI has been the one thing Indians could always count on for fast, easy and seemingly free digital payments. But now, that could be changing.
Starting October 15, 2026, a 0.4% Merchant Discount Rate (MDR) will apply to eligible UPI merchant transactions above ₹2,000, with a maximum charge of ₹300 per transaction. While customers are not being directly charged, the bigger question is what merchants will do with this new cost.
Will they absorb it? Increase prices? Encourage cash or other payment methods? Or quietly pass the cost on to customers?
In this video, we break down what the new UPI charge actually means, why it is being introduced, who will pay it, how merchants could react, and what this could mean for the future of India's biggest digital payment system.
Because the real story isn't just about 0.4%.
It's about what happens when something you've grown used to getting for free suddenly gets a price attached to it.
